What to Do When Someone Dies

Losing a loved one is overwhelming, and knowing what to do next can be challenging. Here’s a simple guide to help you navigate this difficult time.

1. Notify the Authorities – If the person passes away at home, call a doctor or ambulance. If the death is unexpected, the police may need to be involved. In a hospital or aged care facility, staff will handle initial procedures.

2. Obtain a Medical Certificate – A doctor must issue a Medical Certificate of Cause of Death before funeral arrangements can proceed.

3. Contact a Funeral Director – A funeral director will guide you through the next steps, including transporting the deceased and planning the service.

4. Register the Death – The funeral director usually registers the death with the state’s Births, Deaths, and Marriages office.

5. Plan the Funeral – Decide on burial or cremation, service details, and any personal wishes.

6. Notify Key Organisations – Inform banks, Centrelink, superannuation funds, and relevant government agencies.

7. Seek Support – Grieving is natural. Support groups, family, and professional counselling can help you cope.
